Wayne Bisbee called the disqualification at 9pm, despite the fish being landed, locked down and loaded and heading back to the marina at 8:11pm, that’s our heart-breaker.

It was a day for the record books and a night to remember. Following the most marlin ever weighed during a single day in its 30-year history, the real drama of Day One of the 2010 Bisbee’s Black & Blue came shortly after the scales closed at 9 p.m. local time. That’s when Carl Riley and his team aboard Great Escape, a 40-foot Cabo, weighed the largest fish of the day, an 800-pound blue marlin. The fish was finally landed 5 1/2 hours after it became tail-wrapped and died. Because Great Escape did not make it to the weigh station in time, the fish does not count in the standings.

“I’m not in shape for this and I’m absolutely exhausted right now,” Riley said with a tired grin afterwards. “This is the biggest fish I’ve ever caught and this is my first Bisbee’s. It was a total team effort to get this fish in. I just wish I’d spent a few more days in the gym beforehand so we could have landed it sooner.” The huge crowd at the Puerto Paraiso Mall cheered when the weight was announced by Tournament Director Wayne Bisbee.

Since Riley’s blue did not qualify, Jose Almanza and Team Reelaxe emerged as the daily winner. Almanza landed a black marlin that weighed 599 pounds to take the top spot on the Day One leader board. John Stonecipher, fishing aboard Rehab, is currently second with another black at 560 pounds, followed by Buzz Colton (C-Bandit) with a 549-pound black. Ron Pascoe (KW’s Karma) and Russ Armstrong (Super Natural), both scaled fish weighing 431 pounds apiece. Pascoe’s black is ahead based on time, while Armstrong’s blue adds to his early points total.

Nine minutes late.

A total of 10 marlin were weighed yesterday, including the Great Escape’s. One fish just missed the 300-pound minimum and did not qualify. Of the total, three were blue marlin and all the rest were blacks. Black marlin prefer reefs and shallower depths, while blue marlin are more nomadic and open-water oriented. The majority of the weighed fish were found in Grid G-3, which is near the well-known Gordo Bank, a frequent top-producer. The bank is located in the Sea of Cortez, off the eastern tip of the Baja peninsula.

“I’ve never seen so many blacks in one day,” said tournament founder Bob Bisbee as he watched the action at the weigh scales. “We usually only have a couple black marlin per tournament.” There have been a lot of big marlin in the Cabo area for the last couple months and a slight cold front seems to be triggering a hot bite. Thirty-eight billfish were recorded overall during Day One. Three teams are tied in the release division with one blue marlin apiece.

As the richest fishing tournament in the world, the Black & Blue has attracted 103 boats competing for nearly $2 million in prize money. Fishing continues today and concludes tomorrow at 5 p.m. The scales close at 9 p.m.
